Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
