Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
